A Conversation with Drew Roberson, Founder of Steak and Potatoes Wine

Where Ranching Heritage Meets Private Label Winemaking

While most wine labels lean into geography or tasting philosophy, Steak and Potatoes also leans heavily into family legacy. From the very first glance, the brand signals something deeper than varietal or appellation—it tells a story rooted in grit, tradition, and generations of agricultural pride. Produced through a private label winery partnership with NexTerra, Steak and Potatoes Wine founder (Drew Roberson) bridges his Neblett family’s Texas ranching heritage with modern California winemaking, creating a wine brand that feels both authentic and accessible. Drew’s grandparents were Charles Jr. & Ruth Neblett.

The brand is deeply rooted in the Neblett family’s long history in cattle ranching. Its identity draws inspiration from the Hereford operation run by Charles Jr. and Ruth in Stephenville, Texas. The renowned Battle Intense bloodlines that originated from Wiese & Sons in Manning Iowa, helped transform their herd and the cattle industry. Certainly has left a lasting imprint on generations that followed. Today, that same legacy lives on through Steak and Potatoes Wine.

Adding to the authenticity, the original Hereford photographs pulled directly from the family archives—including the striking cattle portraits now featured on the label—form the visual foundation of the brand. These images don’t just decorate the bottle; they connect the wine directly to its agricultural roots and reinforce the values of hard work, quality, and tradition that define the Steak and Potatoes wine brand.

The Power of the Hereford: A Symbol That Speaks Volumes

Q: The Hereford on your label is quite striking. What's the significance of that particular breed?

A: The Hereford on the label gives homage to the original Hereford cattle that came from England in the late 1800s. For Steak and Potatoes wine, the Hereford isn’t just a design choice—it’s a symbol of origin. The breed represents durability, consistency, and heritage, qualities that translate seamlessly into the wine itself. In a crowded retail environment, the bold imagery instantly differentiates the bottle while reinforcing a sense of authenticity consumers can trust.

Five Generations of Texas Ranching

Q: Tell us about your family's connection to the ranching industry. How far back does it go?

A: We are very proud of our family history. I come from five generations of ranching in Texas. My Grandad, Charles Neblett Jr., was related to the Jowell family. The Jowells were one of the first ranching families to bring Hereford cattle to Texas. Jowell Ranch was located where Possum Kingdom Lake is today.

Why Honor This Heritage Through Wine?

Q: What inspired you to create a wine brand honoring this heritage?

A: I'm honored to carry on my family's heritage in the Hereford industry. I wanted to give back in honor of my Grandparents. Wine has long been associated with gathering, sharing meals, and passing stories across generations—making it a natural medium for honoring family history. By working with NexTerra Wine, Steak & Potatoes was able to translate that legacy into a tangible, nationally distributed product without compromising quality or vision.
